Ryan Kyle Cooglerย (born May 23, 1986)ย is an American filmmaker. He has received anย Academy Award, aย BAFTA Award, fourย Black Reel Awards, aย Grammy Award, aย Golden Globe Award, and tenย NAACP Image Awards.
Coogler directed a few short films at the USC School of Cinematic Arts before his feature-length debut withย Fruitvale Stationย (2013). He then transitioned to directing and writing franchise films, including theย Rockyย seriesย spinoff,ย Creedย (2015), as well as theย Marvelย filmsย Black Pantherย (2018) andย Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverย (2022). Coogler also produced theย historical dramaย Judas and the Black Messiahย (2021) and theย supernatural horror filmย Sinnersย (2025), which he also wrote and directed.ย He received nominations for theย Academy Award for Best Pictureย for both films, while forย Sinners,ย he was also nominated forย Best Directorย and won the Oscar forย Best Original Screenplay.
In 2013, he was included onย Time's list of the 30 people under 30 who are changing the world.ย In 2018, Coogler was named the runner-up ofย Time's Person of the Year, and he was included in the annualย Timeย 100ย list of the most influential people in the world.ย In 2021, Coogler, his wife,ย Zinzi Coogler, andย Sev Ohanianย founded multimedia production companyย Proximity Media.
