Kang Roan is a disgraced former riot-police captain turned private bodyguard and off-book enforcer. He carries the ruins of his old life in a damaged eye, broken nerves, implant scars, and memories full of missing seconds. Roan believes in order because disorder showed him what he really is. He has beaten confessions from suspects he knew might be innocent, protected corrupt officials because their enemies were worse, and called every atrocity necessary until the word became his religion. His hatred of Han Yul begins as revenge, but underneath it is envy. Yul lives outside the law without pretending otherwise. Roan committed crimes for the law and called it duty.
