The heroine becomes pregnant, usually unexpectedly. The pregnancy sparks drama regarding the father's identity, the decision of whether to keep the child, the arrangements that must be made before the birth, and whether or how to keep the pregnancy a secret. The pregnancy is often foreshadowed by the main character experiencing nausea or food cravings before she—or the other characters—even realize she is pregnant.
