Luca Guadagninoย (Italian:ย [หluหkaย ษกwadaษฒหษฒiหno]; born 10 August 1971) is an Italian film director and producer.ย His films are characterized by their emotional complexity,ย eroticism, and lavish visuals. Guadagnino has received numerous accolades, including aย Silver Lion, alongside nominations for anย Academy Awardย and threeย BAFTA Awards.
Born inย Palermo, Guadagnino spent part of his childhood in Ethiopia. However, the family returned toย Italy to escape theย Ethiopian Civil War. Guadagnino began his career directing short films and documentaries. He made his feature-film debut withย The Protagonistsย (1999), the first of his many collaborations with actressย Tilda Swinton. His follow-up, Melissa P.ย (2005), was a commercial success in Italy but was met with mixed critical reception.
Guadagnino gained further acclaim with hisย Desireย trilogy,ย which consists of the filmsย I Am Loveย (2009),ย A Bigger Splashย (2015), andย Call Me by Your Nameย (2017). The latter brought him international recognition.ย Suspiriaย (2018), a remake of theย 1977 film, was Guadagnino's first foray into the horror genre. It was a box office failure and polarized critics. Guadagnino's following projects wereย We Are Who We Areย (2020), a coming-of-age miniseries forย HBO, the romantic horror filmย Bones and Allย (2022), the romantic sports filmย Challengersย (2024), and the period romantic dramaย Queerย (2024).
Guadagnino directed several documentaries, includingย Bertolucci on Bertolucciย (2013) andย Salvatore: The Shoemaker of Dreamsย (2020). Aside from filmmaking, he has been involved in the fashion world, directing advertisements for brands likeย Fendiย andย Salvatore Ferragamo. In 2012, Guadagnino founded the production companyย Frenesy Film Company. He also producedย Belluscone: A Sicilian Storyย (2014),ย The Truffle Huntersย (2020),ย Salvatore: The Shoemaker of Dreamsย (2020),ย Holiday, andย Eneaย (2023).
