Gregory, and his beloved wife and friend, Meggy Spletzer, escaped before getting the final step in the surgery and turned against Lars von Retriever. Meggy and Gregory wage a two-person war as Black Riders, "Black Sun" and "Shadow Moon". Gregory, taking on the name of Black Rider, and even Meggy taking on the name, Black Rider 2, were determined to rescue their friends from Lars von Retriever while protecting the United States of America.
