Terry Gilliam's Cyberpunk (1996)
In 2077, a mercenary’s job goes wrong, leaving him fused with the mind of a long-dead revolutionary. The city’s chrome towers and neon alleys twist around this new, unstable consciousness. Megacorporations close in, eager to control the technology. Identity shatters, rebellion is commodified, and even death becomes just another transaction in Night City.
Left 4 Dead 2 (2022)
Civilisation has long since collapsed. The cities are husks, highways snake through abandoned towns, and the dead no longer just wander—they stalk with cunning. Small settlements cling to tenuous safety, barricaded behind rusting gates, while the infected have evolved into more aggressive, adaptive predators. Heat, humidity, and overgrown landscapes turn travel into a gauntlet; abandoned vehicles, decaying farms, and flooded roads hide threats around every corner. A new group of survivors sets out along the southern corridors toward a distant evacuation point, encountering communities broken by fear, greed, and desperation. The infected now display bizarre behavioural mutations: a charging monstrosity capable of toppling doors, a jockey that drags prey into unseen depths, and others that force improvisation and ruthless strategy. Trust is a fragile currency. Every step forward exacts a toll on body and mind, and in a world where rescue might be a legend, survival is no longer just about outrunning the horde—it’s about outlasting the horror inside yourself.
Left 4 Dead (2000)
A virulent pathogen tears through major cities in a matter of weeks, collapsing infrastructure faster than governments can respond. The infected do not simply decay — they mutate under neurological overload, driven by hyper-aggression and distorted sensory processing. Streets empty. Power grids fail. Emergency broadcasts loop into silence. What remains is a fractured landscape of quarantined zones, mass graves, and abandoned highways where survival hinges on movement, trust, and timing. A small group of strangers attempts to cross this dead corridor toward a rumoured evacuation point as military containment measures escalate in the background. The infected are not uniform; some exhibit extreme physiological adaptations — explosive bile dispersal, predatory ambush behaviour, brute-force trauma resistance — forcing constant tactical adaptation. Supplies are scarce, ammunition scarcer. Every safe room is temporary. The true threat isn’t just the horde outside, but the mounting psychological strain within: exhaustion, paranoia, and the slow erosion of hope in a world where rescue may already be a myth.
Grand Theft Auto (1995)
Set in the sprawling excess of mid-1990s Los Santos, Grand Theft Auto follows a retired bank robber living under federal protection whose carefully constructed suburban life masks a growing dissatisfaction with comfort and anonymity. When a chance encounter with an ambitious young hustler reignites his appetite for risk, the two form an uneasy partnership built on opportunity and ego. Their plans begin small, but the lure of status and legacy pushes them toward increasingly dangerous territory. The fragile alliance is further complicated by the return of a volatile figure from the older man’s past, whose loyalty runs as deep as his instability. As the trio navigate high-stakes heists, corrupt officials, and powerful interests operating behind the scenes, personal ambition threatens to fracture what little trust exists between them. In a city driven by image and greed, the pursuit of one last triumph becomes a test of survival — and of how much each man is willing to sacrifice for control.
