He has received numerous accolades, including anΒ Emmy Award, as well as nominations for threeΒ Academy AwardsΒ and aΒ Grammy Award. He has receivedΒ Academy AwardΒ nominations forΒ Best Original ScoreΒ forΒ Barry Jenkins'sΒ MoonlightΒ (2016), If Beale Street Could TalkΒ (2018), andΒ Adam McKay'sΒ Don't Look UpΒ (2021). He also scored McKay'sΒ The Big ShortΒ (2015) andΒ ViceΒ (2018). He is also known for scoringΒ Battle of the SexesΒ (2017),Β The King (2019),Β CruellaΒ (2021), andΒ She SaidΒ (2022).
TheΒ HBOΒ original seriesΒ SuccessionΒ (2018β2023) marked Britell's entry into television. Britell scored all four seasons, earning theΒ Emmy AwardΒ forΒ Outstanding Original Main Title Theme MusicΒ inΒ 2019.Β His scores for the second, third, and fourth seasons ofΒ SuccessionΒ each earnedΒ the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a SeriesΒ nominations inΒ 2020,Β 2022, andΒ 2023. His score forΒ The Underground RailroadΒ was nominated for theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or SpecialΒ inΒ 2021.
His works, as described byΒ Soraya McDonaldΒ ofΒ Film Comment, "seem to organically straddle accessibility and sophistication in a way that goes beyond the typical programming of a big-city pops orchestra...That might have something to do with the fact that Britell has long had one foot in the world of hip-hop and another in the world of classical music."
