A Spanish nobleman in the early 19th century who, upon returning home to California, learns about his mother's death and that Los Angeles is being controlled by a corrupt Spanish official; which leads to Diego creating the identity of Zorro. As the persona of Don Diego de la Vega, he pretends to be cowardly and foppish, but as Zorro, he is brave, cunning, sly, mischievous, and heroic.
