On 2009, the magical board game, Zathura was left untouched for ten years at Middleton High School. Ten years later, six students were given detention: Thomas Witwicky and best friend Jonah Smith for cheating, Sarah Thompson for saying something vulgar at her P.E. teacher, Clarisse Yap for using her phone during a test, Dustin Hayes for accidentally destroying a table during a science experiment and Winston 'Rhino' Wallace for injuring a classmate due to a careless placement of a basketball hoop. During detention, they were supposed to clean up the library all by themselves. Rhino found the 'long lost' board game which miraculously had a cd inside it instead. Thomas found out that it was for the Xbox at the gaming section and both boys decided to play. There were six playable characters so Rhino and Dustin chose two of them. The two other boys joined in, choosing theirs. The girls were the last to be convinced to play it, choosing the last two. When Thomas pressed 'Start', they were dissolved from the library into the game. They ended up in a jungle on a mysterious planet, in the forms of their avatars. Thomas is a badass, high tech human explorer called Dr. Chase Jaeger; Jonah is a human swordsman called Mason Excalibur who was supposed to be Chase's rival now ally; Sarah is an elf assassin called Sylvana; Clarisse is Professor Auroria, a Phantom professor in teleportation, cartography, anatomy and physiology; Rhino is BULK, a heavily armed android who is a weapons expert and Dustin is a diminished Aromodillous who is called Forge is a pilot, engineer and crafter. They knew they had to get out of the game by completing it. What stands in their way is corrupt explorer Vandal Vor, who knows Chase and Mason. The six has to return the six sacred gems to the Palace which were scattered around the Zathura Galaxy before Vandal has all of them. The gems are their ticket home.
