Born in 1982 to the magician Giovanni Zatara and the homo magi Sindella, Zatanna's mother died upon her birth, leaving Giovanni to raise their daughter alone. He did so with difficulty, always doing his best. Giovanni taught his daughter the ways of being a stage magician, traveling the world with her, until the day he disappeared on Zatanna's twenty-sixth birthday. On that day, the sorceress Allura was trapped in Paracelsus' Sword by Zatara as a form of revenge. In return, Allura cast a spell on Zatara: if his daughter approached him, she would lose her life. Zatara then left Earth to find a way to break the curse, Kent Nelson and Xanadu being unable to assist him. Seven years later, Zatanna, still puzzled by her father's disappearance, embarked on a quest to find him. With the help of the Book of Eternity stolen from Xanadu, Zatanna discovered a way to locate her father. Allura, learning that Zatanna was close to finding her father, trapped the magician to force her to free her. Allura led Zatanna to the realm of Kharma where Zee reunited with her father who avoided her without explanation. Allura used this as a form of vengeance against Giovanni. Zatara eventually risked reuniting with his daughter by reversing the curse, allowing the father-daughter duo to defeat Allura. Giovanni lost his life after the battle, having stayed in contact with his daughter for too long. Before dying, he expressed his love for Zatanna and apologized for his absence, leaving her in tears.
