Kitty Pryde, a mutant with the power of phases, transfers her consciousness back in time to the present and warns the X-Men of an imminent threat. She is part of a group of X-Men from the present to prevent the event that triggers this dark future: the murder of Senator Kelly.
The story is a race against time as the X-Men try to stop the murder and thus alter the course of history.
