In X-Men 2, the original X-Men team vanishes after traveling to a remote Pacific island to investigate a strange energy signature. Cyclops barely escapes back to the Xavier School, revealing that Krakoa is not merely an island, but a living, sentient mutant organism that trapped Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel, Havok, and Polaris to feed on their power. Desperate to rescue his students, Professor Charles Xavier dispatches a first rescue squad trained by Dr. Moira MacTaggart, consisting of Vulcan (Cyclops and Havok's long-lost brother), Sway, Petra, and Darwin. Tragically, this first team is overwhelmed and seemingly killed during their mission. Desperate to hide his catastrophic failure and preserve Cyclops' sanity, Xavier telepathically erases Scott Summers' and Alex Summers' memory of their brother and the tragic team before assembling the second crew. Darwin managed to absorb his dying teammates to survive, while Vulcan went into stasis. Xavier then travels the globe to recruit a brand-new, international team of mutants: Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Rogue, Gambit, Thunderbird, Sunfire, and Banshee. Led by Cyclops, this new roster infiltrates Krakoa, successfully frees the original mutants, and combines their powers; Polaris uses magnetic energy to blast Krakoa into deep space, saving the day and launching a celebrated new era for the X-Men.
