Mrs Penstemmon is a grand, talented old witch who lives in Kingsbury. She is quite old and quite regal, giving off a more royal air than the King of Ingary himself. She taught Mrs Fairfax, Suliman, Matilda, and Howl. Howl was her final and most illustrious student but left halfway through his tutelage and never returned to complete it. She is proud of Howl's talent but is concerned about his contract. When Sophie visits her she encourages her to break the contract between Howl and Calcifer. She detects Sophie's magical gift and sees instantly that she's cursed, but cannot lift the Witch's spell. She was murdered by the Witch of the Waste when she refused to give her Howl's location.
