Mrs. Annabel Fairfax is a widowed witch who lives near the Chipping Valley and a friend of Fanny. She is described as plump and kind but dull and chatty. She uses home-made honey in all her spells. She discovers quickly that Martha and Lettie have switched places but lets Lettie stay on the condition that she stay as her real self. Mrs Fairfax sees that Lettie has a real gift for magic and considers her in the same league as the Witch of the Waste. When Howl comes courting Lettie she encourages her to let him because she sees that Lettie could learn a lot more from Howl than from her. When a dog comes to the house, she sees that it is really a bespelled human but is unable to lift the curse.
