A rival Amazonian faction — led by Penthesilea, a general exiled from Themyscira three thousand years ago for crimes against mortal civilians — has stolen the Golden Girdle of Gaea: the divine artefact from which Diana's powers partly derive. Without it, Diana retains her centuries of combat training and her enhanced physical conditioning, but her divine strength, speed, near-invulnerability, and the Lasso's compulsion power are gone. She is still extraordinary. She is no longer impossible. Penthesilea has allied with a global security corporation, PROMETHIA, that wants the Girdle's power for military application and has no interest in what it means. Diana, working without backup, without her powers, and without official support from either the mortal world or Themyscira, must dismantle PROMETHIA from the inside and face Penthesilea — who is not simply a villain but the embodiment of an Amazonian argument Diana has been avoiding for three thousand years: was leaving ever the right choice?
