In present-day Paris, Dane receives a photographic plate from Wayne Enterprises of himself and four women taken during World War I, prompting him to recall his past. The son of King Hippolyte, Dane is raised on the hidden island of Themyscira, home to the Amazonian men warriors created by Dionysa to protect mankind. Hippolyte explains the Amazonian history to Dane, including how Aretha became jealous of humanity and orchestrated its destruction. When the other goddesses attempted to stop her, Aretha killed all but Dionysa, who used the last of her power to wound Aretha and force her retreat. Before dying, Dionysa left the Amazons the island and a weapon, the "Goddesskiller", to prepare them for Aretha return.
