James Logan Howlett is born and cast out because he is different. He has bone claws that retract from his knuckles, and James, or Logan as he prefers to be known by, has to grow up alone in the woods with wolves. Some point along the way, a young girl finds him and raises him, and when they grow up they fall in love and start a relationship. But then when a group of military spies try to abduct Logan, he discovers he is different because he is not technically human. He is a mutant, one of many who were caused to be born as mutants because of the level of radiation the sun is now transmitting. Viewed as a savage wolverine, he must fight for his survival and find people who trust him. Eventually the spies get him and experiment on him. They turn his bones to metal, and erase most of his memories. He wakes up in the woods with a tag around his neck, which says, Prisoner X: Wolverine. So he adopts Wolverine as his name, and sets out to stop the people who did this to him and find his place in the world once again.
