Charlotte Wells (born June 13, 1987) is a New York-based Scottish director, writer, and producer. She wrote and directed three short films as a student in the MBA/MFA dual-degree program at NYU where she was supported by BAFTA New York and Los Angeles. Charlotte has been featured in Filmmaker Magazine's “25 Faces of Independent Film” and was a Fellow at the 2020 Sundance Institute Screenwriters and Directors Labs. Aftersun (2022) is her first feature, for which she received a number of accolades, including Gotham and British Independent Film Awards.
Clara and Ethan haven’t spoken in years. After their mother’s sudden death, they reluctantly return to the remote island where they grew up. The house they once called home is now filled with memories, both cherished and painful, and the siblings must sort through their mother’s belongings in preparation to sell the family estate. The island’s rugged, windswept landscape is a constant reminder of their childhood and the simpler life they left behind. Clara, a successful artist living in London, has always kept her emotions tightly guarded, focusing on her career and distancing herself from the past. Ethan, on the other hand, stayed closer to home but has struggled to find his footing in life, his ambitions stalled and his personal relationships in disarray. The loss of their mother brings all of their buried resentments to the surface. As they go through the house, each object they touch brings back flashes of their shared childhood—moments of love, laughter, and tension. They discover things about their mother they never knew, including letters and photographs that reveal a side of her life they hadn’t imagined. These discoveries force them to confront not only their mother’s secrets but also their own unresolved guilt and grief.
