Black Knight first appeared in Avengers #47 in 1967 and was created by Roy Thomas, George Tuska, and John Verpoorten. Dane Whitman is the nephew of Nathan Garrett, the original Black Knight and a villain of the Avengers. After Garrett died, he left Dane his castle. Later, Dane claimed the Ebony Blade and became the next Black Knight.
