The film opens with a tragic look at the past. Madeline Tuttle and Young Adult Ray Tuttle try to raise their daughter, Young Emily, in a city already collapsing under its own weight. Through tragic circumstances, Emily is left alone, carrying the emotional scars of her childhood into adulthood.
