Jesse's father, seen only in a 1974 flashback that establishes the film's entire moral universe. Kneeling in a cornfield with his five-year-old son, knowing Jody and T.C. are about to execute him, he spends his final moments not on curses or pleas but on a code to live by: "You gotta be one of the good guys, son. 'Cause there's way too many of the bad." He is tough enough that his plea to be brave feels earned, tender enough that his love for his son shatters the heart.
