It was established by a syndicate of wealthy Anglican philanthropists and High-Church clergymen who sought to create a school that combined rigorous classical scholarship with robust Christian character-building. The curriculum was specifically tailored to the sons of the expanding British aristocratic and industrial upper classes. The original campus was centered around an 18th-century manor house purchased in rural Southern England. By the turn of the century, the school had quickly established its reputation for academic excellence and sporting prowess. On 1 July 1997, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary. This centenary coincided with two major global events: the official handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China, and the 36th birthday of Diana, Princess of Wales, occurring exactly one month before her tragic death in Paris on 31 August.
