He is partially based on two of Riddler's bosses in previous Batman media: Daniel Mockridge who fires him from the video game company Competitron to avoid paying him royalties for the "Riddle of the Minotaur" puzzle game in the episode "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?" of Batman: The Animated Series; and Fred Stickley in Batman Forever who fires him from Wayne Enterprises for unethical experiments.
