Atticus Finch, a lawyer and single father living and working in Maycomb, Alabama in the year of 1933, is given the job of defending Tom Robinson a black man charged with assaulting a young woman. During the trial, Atticus and his family go through the hardships that come with defending a black man in the state of Alabama during a period of great racial discrimination.
Meanwhile, his two children Scout and Jem try to make sense of things in the town they live in and the people who live in it, black and white. Mischievous and idealistic Jean Louise “Scout” Finch comments on how she could not understand something at the time but now can appreciate it. Oldest boy Jeremy “Jem” Finch is seen to have a greater understanding of the obstacles thrown their way while also coming into his own maturity.
