Reginald "Red" Oliver Barnes (1874-1912) was born in Southampton, England in a two-story townhouse to Emory Barnes (1819-1884) and Lucy Barnes (1855-1923). He had a twin sister, Mary (1874-1947), and three younger siblings: Arthur Allen (1875-1917), Percival (1877-1953), and Helen Diane (1879-1966). His father was abusive, causing him and Arthur to flee to the sea at the age of 13, in 1887. At the age of 16, Barnes became a sailor and met his future fiancé, Iris Franzershreck (1876-1933). The two began dating the next year. In May 1912, Barnes signed onto the Titanic as the steward of cabins B-52/B-54/B-56 - owned by Caledon Hockley.
