James "Jack" Dawson (19 September 1891 - 15 April 1912) is a "live life as it happens" steerage man and painter who only gets onto the ship via winning the tickets in a game of poker with the Gunderson Brothers. He and his friend Fabrizio board, and meet a wide variety of steerage passengers. Later, as Jack is smoking towards the back of the ship he sees the 17-year-old Rose DeWitt BukKater attempt to commit suicide. He saves her, and convinces her to live. Throughout the voyage he gets yelled at, dumped, framed, and arrested, all while trying to save Rose from drowning in the rapidly sinking ship.
