I liked Fanscription's idea of having Batgirl be Gordon's granddaughter and a classmate of Robin's so I'm gonna reuse that there. Similar to Robin, she would also be searching for her independence and finds it by becoming Batgirl. In this version, Barbara becomes Batgirl when Gordon gets frozen by Freeze, needing to find a way to thaw him and anyone else who got caught in Freeze's crossfire. She would be officially brought on to the Batfam when Batman sees how him and Batgirl are in the same situation right now.
