Elizabeth George Speare's historical fiction novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond follows the journey of 16-year-old Kit Tyler as she leaves her home in Barbados to live with her only remaining family in colonial New England. When many of the villagers come down with a deadly fever, an angry mob tries to attack Hannah Tupper, believing her to be a witch responsible for the illnesses. Kit manages to get Hannah to safety, only to be accused of witchcraft herself. A variety of internal and external forces tug at every character in The Witch of Blackbird Pond. How they resolve these tensions determines their eventual individual identities, and the collective process will determine the identity of the colony.
