An atheist ex-soldier turned detective travels with a journalist and her editor to the remote island of Summerisle, located in the waters off the Scottish Highlands, to search for a missing girl. The trio is welcomed by Lord Summerisle, the leader of a small community that soon reveals itself to be a cult of religious fanatics; they appear to be concealing details about the girl, who seems destined to be the victim of a cruel sacrifice during the May Day festivities...
