While investigating a disturbance in outer space, Jean is hit by deadly radiation from a solar flare. This causes her to disappear for a month. When she returns, she has no memory of what happened; however, an emissary of the Shi'ar Empire, D'Ken, has come to Earth to execute Jean for causing a star to go supernova destroying a planet that resides in the Shi'ar Empire. Meanwhile, an organization known as the Hellfire Club takes interest in Jean's new potential.
