On her 1939 engagement day, 18-year-old wealthy heiress Anne Henderson goes horseback riding and is suddenly terrorized and chased at full gallop by a frantic, screaming woman dressed in black. Anne is torn between her respectable, father-approved fiancé (stockbroker Robert Blake) and a rebellious, persistent former suitor named David Mitchell. Pressured by David's persistence and her own rebellious streak, she chooses to elope with David instead of marrying Robert.
