a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Pacific Ocean detects a mysterious hammering sound from a sunken WWII submarine. The investigation reveals the sub was lost 20 years prior, and Chief Boatswain's Mate Bell was its only survivor. Consumed by survivor's guilt for accidentally exposing the submarine to enemy fire, Bell believes the sounds are his drowned crewmates calling him to join them, eventually leading him to leap overboard to his death.
