Prospero, a magician and rightful Duke of Milan, has been stranded on an island with his daughter Miranda for twelve years after his treacherous brother Antonio and King Alonso of Naples conspired to depose him and set him adrift at sea with the then 3-year-old Miranda. Possessing great magic from his years of study, he has bound an airy spirit named Ariel and Caliban, the deformed son of the witch Sycorax into his service. When Prospero divines the presence of his brother aboard a passing ship, he summons a tempest to force the vessel ashore, stranding several of the passengers on the island. Thus, Prospero begins his quest for absolution, complicated by the machinations of the disgruntled Caliban, the deceitful butler and jester Stephano and Trinculo, and the blossoming romance between Alonso's son Prince Ferdinand and Miranda.
