Andy Dufresne, a successful banker, is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in a harsh prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. However, only Andy knows he didn't commit the crimes. While there, he forms a friendship with a prison contraband smuggler named Red, experiences the brutality of prison life, adapts, helps the corrupt warden and secretly plans his escape, all in 19 years.
