Before Knuckles was born, Enerjak drove the Echidnas off of Angel Island. There were a handful left, but over time only Lara-Le remained. Then Enerjak returned, having sought to finish them. Locke had escaped, but Lara-Le had left her child far away from the Master Emerald, where the battle was fought. Then Enerjak extracted the life out of Lara-Le.
