Villeneuve began his career in his home country, directing four French-language dramas: August 32nd on Earth (1998); Maelström (2000); Polytechnique (2009), a dramatisation of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre; and Incendies (2010). Both films were critically and commercially successful, with the former earning him Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

In the ivy-covered walls of an esteemed New England college, a group of eccentric and intellectually gifted students, led by the enigmatic Julian Morrow, form a tight-knit clique that delves into esoteric studies and indulges in decadent rituals. As they delve deeper into their studies of Greek classics, their experiments in morality spiral out of control, leading to a shocking murder that fractures their once unbreakable bond. Richard Papen, an outsider drawn into their inner circle, narrates the tale of obsession, guilt, and the unraveling of secrets that threaten to consume them all.
