Roderick Burgess is a major antagonistic character in The Sandman. A wealthy and powerful yet arrogant English occultist who formed the Order of Ancient Mysteries. In the year 1916, he successfully summoned Death but, through trickery, captured her brother Dream instead. He kept Dream imprisoned for decades, leading to the Dreaming’s decline and before his death, had a son, Alexander, who became Dream’s reluctant caretaker.
