Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg (born June 5, 1971), formerly known by his stage name Marky Mark, is an American actor and former rapper. His work as a leading man spans the comedy, drama, and action genres. He has received multiple accolades, including a BAFTA Award, and nominations for two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and nine Primetime Emmy Awards. Wahlberg was born in Boston. As a youth, he took part in a number of violent and racially motivated attacks. He gained fame as a member of the hip hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch in the 1990s, with whom he released the albums Music for the People (1991) and You Gotta Believe (1992). Wahlberg made his screen debut in Renaissance Man (1994) and had his first starring role in Fear (1996). He received critical praise for his performance as porn actor Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights (1997). The Overseer is a 2025 American superhero film written, co-produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and starring Sasha Calle in the title role. It is the first installment in the Forgotten and Returned film series, which is marked as the revival of Shyamalan's realistic vision of superheroes. Calle is supported by Mackenzie Foy, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bryce Dallas Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Wahlberg. In the film, a young girl befriends her superhuman neighbor when the latter saves her from a group of gangsters and discovers that she may be a long lost hero. The Overseer premiered in London on January 29th, 2025, and was released on February 8th; the film received positive reviews with praise for its visual effects, direction, and performances (particularly those of Calle and Foy), along with the action sequences and the film's style and portrayal of superhumans. It was viewed as Shyamalan's best superhero film since Unbreakable, and has earned a strong cult following after it became a major financial success at the box-office, grossing $985 million worldwide against its $153 million budget. A sequel was announced a month later and is slated to be released one year after this film.
