The protagonist of the book. Big, heavy and slow, but hardworking and caring over those he loves. Arthur is favoured by his father and has a strained relationship with his younger brother, Jake. He later falls in love with the reverend's daughter, Laura, but Jake pursues her to spite him. After Laura gets pregnant with Jake's child, Arthur marries her to avert her crisis. The two later have two more children, Julie and March.
