The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart follows four gifted children—Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance—who are recruited by the kind but eccentric Mr. Benedict after passing a series of unusual tests. Mr. Benedict reveals that the world is being influenced by hidden messages known as the “Emergency,” sent out from the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, run by his evil twin brother, Mr. Curtain. The children go undercover at the Institute and discover that Mr. Curtain plans to use a mind-control machine called the Whisperer to take over the world. Using their unique talents—Reynie’s problem-solving, Kate’s resourcefulness, Sticky’s memory, and Constance’s stubborn resistance—they work together to stop Curtain’s scheme. In the end, they foil his plan and prove that even kids can take on extraordinary challenges when they use their strengths and trust one another.
