Karen Sheila Gillan (/ˈɡɪlən/; born 28 November 1987) is a Scottish actress and filmmaker. She gained recognition for her work in British film and television, particularly for playing Amy Pond, a primary companion to the Eleventh Doctor in the science fiction series Doctor Who (2010–2013). Her early film roles include the thriller Outcast (2010) and the romantic comedy Not Another Happy Ending (2013). She also worked on the stage in Britain, appearing in John Osborne's play Inadmissible Evidence (2011). Gillan transitioned to Hollywood, starring in the horror film Oculus (2013) and playing the lead in the ABC sitcom Selfie (2014). She achieved stardom for portraying Nebula in several films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe(2014–2023), which are among the highest-grossing films of all time, and Ruby Roundhouse in the fantasy films Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). She also wrote and directed the drama film The Party's Just Beginning (2018), which she starred in. She has starred in the comedy film Gunpowder Milkshake (2021), the thriller film Dual (2022), the coming-of-age film Late Bloomers (2023), and returned to British television with the series Douglas Is Cancelled (2024). Dr. Rowan Mayfair is a gifted neurosurgeon in San Francisco, California. When her estranged birth mother Deirdre Mayfair dies in New Orleans, she begins to learn about the old Southern family to which she belongs. Michael Curry is a contractor who specializes in the restoration of old homes while dreaming of his childhood in New Orleans and yearning to return there. Aaron Lightner, a psychic scholar and member of a secret society called the Talamasca, has been studing the Mayfairs from afar. The matriarchal family—known to the Talamasca as the "Mayfair Witches"—have a long and sordid history. Among the supernatural events surrounding them is Lasher, a spirit with wicked motives who has plagued the Mayfairs for centuries. His wish is to be made flesh so that he may walk the earth again in the permanent physical form of a human being, and he sets about slowly seducing Rowan.
