Coming from The Invisible Man, by H. G. Wells, it was a scientist who used himself as a guinea pig for a formula that altered his body's refractive indexes, making him invisible, which made him go crazy when he couldn't reverse the effect. When he was found by Mina Murray and the rest of the group, he was sexually abusing the female students at Rosa Coote's girls' school, who they believed were becoming pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
