Jeffrey Warren "Jeff" Daniels (born February 19, 1955) is an American actor and musician. He founded a non-profit theatre company, the Purple Rose Theatre Company, in his home state of Michigan. He has performed in a number of stage productions, both on and off Broadway. He has been nominated for the Tony Award as Best Actor for the Broadway play God of Carnage (2009), along with his other three cast-mates. He has had a thriving film career, from his debut in 1981 in Ragtime, through State of Play in 2009. For his film work, he has received three Golden Globe Award nominations, including as Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical for Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) (hence the name of his theatre company). He has also received nominations by the Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Awards, and several for his work in The Squid and the Whale (London Critics Circle Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, Chlotrudis Awards and Gotham Awards).

It starts in 1860s with man being shot and falls and letter is read. Sarah returns to hometown after years in city to heal from a heartbreak, visits a bar, runs into Jake, her high school love, now a musician performing with old friends, former classmates John, Tim, Ritchie. Old feelings resurface. They revisit places they used to go, think about past, walk through park, laugh, share old stories, lay on grass and look at sky. One day she learns that he is engaged to Emily, it makes a tense emotional rift. After arguement with Emily, relizes feelings for Sarah. Finds her and expresses love. She receives job offer in another city, forcing her to make a tough decision, leaves, believing it’s best for them. He sees her off at a station. They share heartfelt goodbye. Months later, she returns. Jake is performing. Their eyes meet. They talk, realize they still have feelings for each other and decide to dating. Jake and his friends are sent to army. After a month of writing letters are in action of Civil War. After heroic moments, he knows every day could be last and writes a letter to Sarah if he dies. She had married rich Union officer, as her father wanted, but he was killed by Jake in War. Jake is shot and dying, we are back in 1st scene. The letter is sent. She cry. After months Jake appears at her door alive. Talking about how Ritchie saved him and then they were in a shootout but survived and spent long time in military hospital. She is in tears. They hug and kiss.
