Sigismund of Luxembourg was King of Hungary and the Holy Roman Empire and half-brother of the Bohemian King Wenceslas IV. He was partly responsible for the burning of the Czech preacher and reformer Jan Hus at the Council of Constance. After the death of Wenceslaus IV, he tried to win the Bohemian crown, but became a bitter enemy to most of the Bohemian kingdom. However, he had the Czech Catholic nobility on his side. Sigismund led several crusades against the Hussites, but was defeated. In the Czech lands he earned the unflattering nickname "Red Fox".
