Samuel Levinson (born January 8, 1985) is an American filmmaker and actor. He is the son of Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson. In 2010, he received his first writing credit as a co-writer for the action comedy film Operation Endgame. The following year, he made his directorial film debut with Another Happy Day (2011), which premiered at Sundance Film Festival. He then received a writing credit on his father's HBO television film The Wizard of Lies (2017). He continued writing and directing feature films for Assassination Nation (2018) and Malcolm & Marie (2021). In 2019, Levinson created the HBO teen drama series Euphoria, adapted from the Israeli series of the same name. The series is popular with audiences and received positive reviews from critics. In 2023, he created the HBO series The Idol, which was controversial and received negative reviews. Elliot Marsh, a guilt-ridden paramedic haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his wife, Clara. When a series of brutal murders rocks his small, isolated community, Elliot begins receiving cryptic messages that seem to come from Clara, leading him to believe she may still be alive—or something far worse. The murders are linked to a growing cult-like movement spreading through the town, known only as “The Followers.” The group, led by the enigmatic and magnetic Father Adrian, claims to offer its members liberation from their suffering by helping them "shed their hollow selves" and embrace a truer, darker form of existence. Elliot begins to investigate the cult and its connection to Clara’s disappearance, but the deeper he digs, the more he begins to question his own sanity. His memories become fractured, his reflection starts to move independently, and he begins to experience horrifying visions of shadowy, eyeless figures watching him from the edges of his perception. Elliot infiltrates the cult’s inner sanctum, discovering that "The Hollowing" is a ritual designed to sever the soul from the body, allowing the empty shell to be possessed by an ancient, malevolent force. In a chilling revelation, Elliot learns that Clara was the first successful subject of the ritual, and she now exists as both a living corpse and a conduit for the entity spreading through the town.
