Craig Mazin and A24’s adaptation of The Hobbit reimagines J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic as a darker, character-driven epic about inheritance, obsession, displacement, and the cost of reclaiming a home. When Bilbo Baggins, a sheltered hobbit with an unexpected appetite for adventure, is drawn into a quest led by Thorin Oakenshield and his company of exiled Dwarves, he leaves the safety of the Shire for the brutal roads of Middle-earth. Their journey takes them through ancient forests, ruined kingdoms, hidden valleys, and the dangerous halls beneath the Misty Mountains, where Bilbo discovers a strange golden ring—and encounters Gollum, whose fractured existence hints at the terrible power surrounding it. As the company approaches Erebor, their quest becomes inseparable from the buried history of the Dwarves: the rise of their civilization under Thráin I, the wealth and downfall of Thrór, and Thráin II’s devastating loss. Meanwhile, the survivors of Dale struggle beneath the corrupt rule of Lake-town’s Master while Bard carries the forgotten legacy of Girion and the weapon destined to challenge the dragon Smaug. Across the season, the Dwarves are pursued by Azog, a relentless Orc warlord whose vendetta against the House of Durin spans generations. Elves such as Elrond and the icy Thranduil become reluctant allies and adversaries as ancient grievances resurface. By the time Smaug descends upon Lake-town and Erebor, Bilbo and Thorin have been transformed by the journey—but the greatest danger is no longer the road home. As the reclaimed kingdom fills with treasure, Thorin begins to succumb to the same sickness that destroyed his grandfather, threatening to turn victory into catastrophe. The adaptation builds toward the Battle of Five Armies, where Dwarves, Men, Elves, Orcs, and other forces collide over Erebor and its treasure, forcing Bilbo to confront what his adventure has truly cost.
