In Gilead, fertile women, known as Handmaids, are forced into sexual servitude to bear children for the elite couples who have trouble conceiving, due to a decline in fertility rates. The story is told through the eyes of Offred, a Handmaid, as she navigates this oppressive society and struggles to survive while searching for her daughter.
