Hal Jordan is a pilot at Ferris Airlines with a huge ego. He is in a romantic relationship with the CEO’s daughter, Carol. One day a green alien ship crashes in front of his plane. Inside he finds an alien telling him that he has now joined the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peace-keeping force. Hal is transported to the planet Oa, where he is trained to create constructs through his own willpower using his rechargeable ring. The crashed alien was Abin Sur, and he was attacked by an alien force feeding off of fear known as Parallax. Sur did a lot of damage to Parallax, and the beast crashed on Earth. Meanwhile, scientist Hector Hammond has found the creature, and is experimenting on it, when he cuts himself, letting some of the creature sleep into his skin. After his reluctant training, Hal fights Hammond who is possessed by Parallax, and he has finally mastered the ring. He kills Parallax and sends Hammond to SuperMax super prison. He kisses Carol goodbye, promising to come back soon, and joins the Green Lantern Corps.
