Following the death of Don Vito Corleone, his son Michael is chosen to lead the family business. The new head of the family must deal with a changing landscape of friendships and enmities, having to negotiate with the Jewish mob and losing Frankie's support. At the same time, Michael narrowly escapes a bombing. Simultaneously, Don Vito's rise and origins in Sicily and as an immigrant in New York are recalled.
