Zachary Edward Snyder (born March 1, 1966) is an American filmmaker. He made his feature film debut in 2004 with Dawn of the Dead, a remake of the 1978 horror film of the same name. Since then, he has directed or produced a number of comic book and superhero films, including 300 (2006) and Watchmen (2009), as well as the Superman film that started the DC Extended Universe, Man of Steel (2013), and its follow-ups, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), the latter of which had a director's cut released in 2021. He also directed the animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010), the psychological action film Sucker Punch (2011), the zombie heist film Army of the Dead (2021), and the two-part space opera films Rebel Moon (2023) and Rebel Moon—Part Two: The Scargiver (2024). In 2004, he founded the production company The Stone Quarry (formerly known as Cruel and Unusual Films) alongside his wife Deborah Snyder and producing partner Wesley Coller. The First Cross is an American Christian Western action thriller miniseries created by Scott Frank and developed by Angel for their streaming platform of the same name. Produced by Pinnacle Peak Pictures and Kendrick Brothers and written by Taylor Sheridan, it is the second installment of a television franchise by Angel about the American West and is the first prequel to Wyoming's Cross. The series stars Trace Adkins, Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ving Rhames, and Kurt Russell. It follows the first generation of the Stones, including Bailey Stone's great-great-grandfather Harrison, and details how and why the family became Christians and follows their journey to eventually own the property that Bailey would call home. The First Cross had its premiere in Cheyenne on November 6th, 2028 and began streaming on December 1st. The series received universal acclaim from critics, audiences, biblical viewers, and fans of its predecessor, who praised its visuals, action, direction, story, score, performances (particularly Gibson and Moretz), and emotional weight. A sequel miniseries starring Anne Hathaway as an older version of Moretz's character, entitled The Weight of the Cross, is in development.
